How to Configure and Fix IPTV EPG: Electronic Program Guide Guide

Smart TV screen displaying an interactive Electronic Programme Guide grid with live program timeline

An Electronic Program Guide (EPG) transforms raw IPTV streaming from a blind channel list into an intuitive, interactive television experience. It displays current and upcoming program schedules, movie synopses, episode descriptions, and start/end times directly on your television screen.

However, missing program data, empty guide grids displaying 'No Information Available', and schedules shifted by several hours due to timezone mismatches are common hurdles for subscribers. This technical guide explains how XMLTV guides function and how to configure them flawlessly across all major players.

1. How Electronic Program Guides Work: XMLTV Feeds

Program schedules are transmitted using standardized XMLTV data files that map program times to specific channel IDs.

An EPG feed is fundamentally an XML-formatted text document hosted on a web server. Inside this document, every television network has a unique identifier known as a 'tvg-id' (for example, 'SkySportsMainEvent.uk' or 'ESPN.us').

Below each channel declaration, the XMLTV file lists program blocks with standardized UTC timestamps, such as `<programme start='20261021200000 +0000' stop='20261021220000 +0000'>` followed by the show's title, episode name, and synopsis.

When your IPTV player loads the EPG URL, it cross-references the 'tvg-id' embedded in your channel list with the corresponding entries in the XMLTV document and renders the familiar on-screen grid. If the channel's internal tag does not match the XML entry exactly, the guide remains blank.

2. Automatic Xtream Codes EPG vs. Custom External XMLTV

Depending on your connection format, your player retrieves guide data automatically or via a dedicated secondary URL.

When you log into an app using the Xtream Codes API format, the server automatically provides the companion XMLTV EPG endpoint to the player. In 95% of cases, no manual guide setup is required; simply allow the player a minute to download and cache the data.

However, if you connect using a standard M3U playlist URL, your player application may require you to manually paste an external EPG URL in the settings menu. Flexe IPTV provides a high-speed, compressed XMLTV EPG URL in your welcome email that updates every four hours.

GZIP Compressed EPG Feeds

Always use an EPG link ending in '.xml.gz' rather than '.xml' if your player supports it. GZIP compression reduces the file download size by over 80%, drastically cutting guide load times on smart TVs and Firesticks.

3. Troubleshooting 'No Information Available' & Empty Grids

Follow these step-by-step procedures when your guide displays blank rows instead of scheduled shows.

If your TV guide shows 'No Information Available' across all channels, the issue is almost always a corrupted local guide cache or a network timeout during the initial download.

First, initiate a forced manual refresh. In TiviMate, go to Settings > EPG > EPG Sources > select your source > 'Update'. In IPTV Smarters Pro, click the Settings gear icon > 'EPG' > 'Update EPG'.

If the guide remains blank, clear the EPG cache to force the player to re-download the XMLTV database. In TiviMate, navigate to Settings > EPG > 'Clear EPG'. Wait 10 seconds, then click 'Update EPG'. Ensure your device has at least 300MB of free internal storage to store the uncompressed schedule database.

4. Correcting Timezone Discrepancies & Schedule Shifts

Fixing schedules that show program listings running several hours ahead of or behind real-world broadcast times.

If your guide displays a 9:00 PM football match at 4:00 PM or 11:00 PM, the timestamps in the XMLTV feed are not aligned with your local system clock. Because international channels originate from multiple timezones (e.g. UK GMT, US Eastern, Central European Time), a timezone shift offset is required.

Most premium IPTV players allow you to configure global or per-source time offsets. In TiviMate, go to Settings > EPG > EPG Sources > your source > 'Time Shift' and adjust the offset by +1, -1, +5, etc., in hours until the live red timeline indicator aligns perfectly with the current show.

In IPTV Smarters Pro, navigate to Settings > Time Format / EPG Time Shift, select your local offset (e.g., UTC+01:00), and click Save.

5. Optimizing EPG Performance in TiviMate & Smarters

Configuring optimal update schedules prevents background memory hogging and guide lag.

  • Set Update Interval to 24 Hours: Configure your player to update EPG once every 24 hours upon application launch. Updating every 2 hours wastes device memory and router bandwidth unnecessarily.
  • Enable 'Update on App Start': Ensure your player checks for fresh guide updates automatically when launched so you always have the latest sporting schedule.
  • Assign EPG Manually to Custom Channels: If a specific channel lacks a guide, long-press the channel in TiviMate > select 'Assign EPG' > search for the network name in the database and link it manually.
  • Enable Past Days Catch-Up: If your subscription plan includes 7-day catch-up television, enable 'Store program data for past days' in player settings to navigate back in time and replay missed events.
